Invisalign® gives you a discreet way to straighten your teeth without everyone you interact with noticing anything. The same cannot be said about traditional metal braces, which were the standard way to straighten teeth for over a century. Metal braces are impossible to miss, and having all that metal on your teeth ruins their appearance.…
Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Dental implants have become a popular way to replace missing teeth without negatively affecting other teeth. Dental implants also prevent bone loss in the patient’s jawbone. However, you may be wondering if you are a good candidate for these replacement teeth. Read on to learn more.
Candidates for dental implants
The right candidate for dental implants already has good health. This will allow the patient to quickly recover. Patients should also have healthy gum tissue, which will reduce the risk of a painful and potentially dangerous infection later on.
To successfully get dental implants, the patient must have enough bone in the jawbone to support implants. Sometimes, patients who are interested in getting dental implants have had missing teeth for several years. This means that some of the bone in the jawbone may have been lost.
The good news is that even if a patient does not have enough bone to support an implant, the dentist can fix this. Bone grafting involves taking bone from another area, usually the patient’s soft palate, and placing it in the jawbone. This new bone will fuse with the existing bone over several months, resulting in a stronger jaw. The patient may also take supplements that encourage bone growth. After a bone graft procedure, the dentist can then proceed with the dental implant process.
Patients must also already have good oral hygiene. This is especially important right after the implants have been placed. Poor oral hygiene after dental implant surgery can result in a painful infection and even a failed implant. Patients should brush the teeth and rinse with a saltwater solution right after surgery.
Once the implant has been placed, good oral hygiene continues to be integral. If patients do not care for dental implants, the tissues around the implants may become infected. This is known as peri-implantitis. It causes the gums to become inflamed and the patient may experience bone loss. In some cases, this can cause the implant to loosen and fall out.
Before getting dental implants, patients should quit smoking. The failure rate for implants for smokers is much higher than that of nonsmokers. One reason for this is that smokers are more likely to experience an infection than nonsmokers. This can cause the bone to fail to fuse to the implant. It can also cause the implant to become loose and fall out later on.
Smokers, who are considering getting dental implants, should stop smoking before getting implants. This will ensure that the patients will not be smoking during recovery and will be able to heal faster.
