Teeth whitening treatments are the most common procedures performed in cosmetic dentistry. There is nothing more appealing than a sparkling white smile. Cosmetic Dentistry Options -What are Invisible Braces?
Invisible braces are orthodontic appliances that are often impossible to notice when worn. The term is often used to describe clear aligners, which are transparent plastic trays used to straighten teeth, but invisible braces can also be used to describe subtler types of braces like lingual and ceramic braces. Invisible braces are typically used for cosmetic purposes, to improve the appearance of teeth. However, a lot of dentists also recommend them to improve oral health.
For over a century, people who had poor teeth alignment had no choice but to use traditional metal braces to straighten their teeth. These appliances consist of metal brackets that are cemented to each of the patient's teeth and metal wires that are used to apply pressure to their teeth. Most people are not keen on the idea of traditional braces because they draw attention to the mouth.
Thanks to invisible braces, it is now possible to straighten teeth without compromising the appearance of the patient's teeth.
How invisible braces work
The process of getting invisible braces starts with a visit to the dentist. Clear aligners are the most popular type of invisible braces and they involve wearing aligner trays for two weeks before switching them out with a new aligner that brings the person's teeth closer to the desired position.
The patient gets several aligners trays at the start of their clear braces treatment and they are advised to wear the tray for at least 20 hours each day for effective teeth straightening.
The aligner trays are removable, which provides a few benefits to the patient. These include:
- Clear aligners do not restrict the foods the patient gets to enjoy since they can be removed for meals.
- Clear aligners do not hinder oral hygiene as braces do.
- Clear aligners provide more comfortable treatment for the patient. There is less of an adjustment period with clear aligners.
Other types of invisible braces
Other than clear aligners, general dentists often recommend ceramic braces when patients are considering invisible braces treatment. Ceramic braces are another cosmetic dentistry option that can help improve the appearance of teeth, while also ensuring good oral health.
Ceramic invisible braces are very similar to traditional metal ones. They are designed the same, except with different materials. Instead of metal brackets and wires, ceramic brackets are used along with transparent, plastic-based wires. However, the process is exactly the same. The patient will visit the dentist every few weeks for adjustments until the teeth have shifted into the appropriate position.
The benefits of this type of invisible braces are that patients do not have to worry about having a mouth full of metal. Additionally, ceramic braces are more affordable than clear aligners.
