a woman with a set of Invisalign alignersNow that you have started treatment with your Invisalign in Tysons, your orthodontist is going to expect you to be responsible and maintain them. That means, knowing how to properly care for and clean the trays. If you’re unsure what to do, allow us to give you the do’s and don’ts of how to clean your Invisalign aligners.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional braces. If you’re looking to achieve a straighter smile without the metal brackets and wiring, you can do so with Invisalign’s clear, plastic trays. These removable aligners gently move your teeth into the desired position, lessening the discomfort that can come with wearing braces. Invisalign trays are clear, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment without anyone noticing. They also make it easier to eat and drink since you must take them out beforehand.

The Cleaning Process

Now that you’re on the road to a straighter smile, you’ll need to make sure you not only wear them according to your orthodontist in Tysons instructions, but you’ll need to clean them carefully and correctly. This will ensure your treatment is successful.

The Do’s

  • When preparing for your morning oral hygiene ritual, remove the aligners and clean them to remove any bacteria. You’ll also need to be sure to brush and floss your teeth like normal (two times a day for two minutes and floss at least once a day.)
  • Rinse your aligners each time you remove them. Dry saliva and plaque can build up, so rinsing the trays can keep them from serving as a haven for bacteria to grow. You can use special Invisalign cleaner or clear anti-bacterial soap to keep your trays clean. You may also try using a soft-bristled toothbrush, but be careful not to brush too hard.
  • Soak your aligners each day using a denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals. Once they’ve soaked, use a different toothbrush than the one for your teeth, to remove any plaque or food debris before rinsing and reinserting them in your mouth.

The Don’ts

  • Never leave your aligners out in the open air. Allowing them to dry out can cause bacteria to build, and you’re more likely to lose them if not kept in the case.
  • If you want to keep your treatment a secret from others, don’t use toothpaste, as it will dull the sheen, making them more noticeable. Toothpaste is also abrasive and can damage your aligners.
  • Avoid scented or colored soaps. These can stain your trays and cause them to have an unpleasant taste when you reinsert them into your mouth.
  • Never eat with your aligners. They’re not meant for the power that chewing requires and can damage them. Make sure to always take them out and put them in their case until you are finished eating and/or drinking.

Wearing Invisalign and caring for your aligners isn’t rocket science. By following your orthodontist’s instructions and cleaning your trays correctly, your treatment will be a success!
