Reasons for a Bone Graft Procedure from Your Dentist

Bone Graft Tysons, VA

A bone graft procedure allows your dentist to repair damaged teeth or fill in spaces between teeth where teeth have been lost. This procedure is generally performed when you’re missing one or more teeth, and you’re not able to wear an implant, bridge, or denture. After the bone graft has been performed and allowed to heal, your dentist will be able to help restore your smile with an alternative option that fits your needs and lifestyle.

Why should I get a bone graft?

Tooth extraction or dental surgery can cause damage to your jawbone, but there are ways to recover. A graft is an essential procedure that helps restore your oral health and smile. There are two types of bone grafts: Allografts and autografts. The first one involves using tissue from someone else’s body, while autograft uses tissue from yourself. For most patients, undergoing a graft process seems quite invasive. However, it does help strengthen areas that have been damaged by trauma or stressors.

Grafts are recommended when dental procedures such as tooth extraction, removal of impacted wisdom teeth, and orthodontic treatment, to name a few. These procedures can lead to bone loss which can affect your bite and oral health in general. The bone that is lost may also cause gum disease since there’s no bone protection anymore. Because of these possible complications, a procedure is done to restore your jaw’s structure by injecting tissue into it.

What happens during my surgery?

During your bone graft surgery, your dentist will remove a small amount of healthy bone from either an area in your mouth or an area of your jaw that you don’t use. A second incision may be made on another part of your jawbone. The bone removed from one side is placed into another position, creating space, and increasing volume in areas where bones have been lost. In some cases, dental implants may also be put into place during a single session to replace missing teeth or restore fractured jaws.

How long does it take to recover from the surgery?

The procedure doesn’t have to be major surgery and doesn’t always mean you’ll need to go under anesthesia. It is often performed as an outpatient and could take anywhere between one and four hours, depending on whether there are complications.

You’ll be under close supervision by your dentist throughout your healing process, so if you have any pain or feel it’s taking longer than expected to recover, it’s always best to let them know right away. Recovery times can vary based on several factors, including what kind of graft was performed and whether complications occurred during surgery. Therefore, it is best to consult with your dentist about how long it will take you to recover after receiving a bone graft procedure fully.

Most patients can go back to work within two weeks, although some may be instructed to take off an additional week depending on their job. For example, someone working in construction might need more time away from work than someone who works at a desk. In general, though, it should only take about one week to feel like you’re fully recovered.
