Everything You Want to Know About a Root Canal

So, when is the best time to get a root canal? Anytime you experience any of the following symptoms, a root canal may be exactly what you need:

  • ·         Excessive tooth pain that is excruciating to endure
  • ·         Swollen or tender gums that cause discomfort when chewing, speaking or at rest
  • ·         An abscess tooth that has caused major problems
  • ·         Teeth that have become discolored
  • ·         Extreme tooth sensitivity to heat and frigid temperatures

These are signs that either a tooth is already “dead” or is slowly coming to that point. This is the time where a root canal is needed. Root canals are stereotyped by many people as being incredibly painful. This just isn’t true. There have been many advancements made in the field of dentistry throughout the years, and root canals are one of the treatment options that has come a long way.

A root canal procedure consists of the following:

  1. The disease pulp and nerve inside of your tooth will be removed so as to keep any further infections from spreading
  2. The tooth is then thoroughly cleaned with every sight of the infection removed.
  3. In order to keep the open area from contracting further infection, the freshly-cleaned area is sealed with a specialized composite material.

The procedure can usually be done in a few visits as healing time is required. The length of healing time depends on each patient. Typically, a week is the average length of time for a patient to fully heal, though additional time may be required.
