Are Dental Implants Worth the Added Cost?

November 10, 2018

Dentist talking to patient about dental implant costsDental implant supported tooth replacement has quickly become the gold-standard tooth replacement option because they are the only solution that restores both the roots and crowns of missing teeth. However, the number one factor that causes patients to hesitate before beginning a dental implant tooth replacement plan is the cost. Even though they do come with a higher price tag, many people find the benefits of these treatment options far outweigh the potential drawbacks, making them well worth your investment.

Is Bone Grafting Before Dental Implants Important?

August 14, 2018

Dentist showing patient dental x-raysFollowing the loss of one or more teeth, the jawbone and gum tissue no longer receive stimulus from tooth roots. Without this stimulus, the body reroutes nutrients to other areas, which leads to diminished jawbone density and gum tissue volume over time. Before placing one or more dental implants, we may need to provide a bone or soft tissue graft in order to ensure the dental implant post will successfully fuse with the supportive structures to anchor your replacement tooth or teeth. In this post, we’ll discuss the types of bone grafts and why they may be necessary prior to the placement of dental implants.

There is Nothing to Fear with Sedation Dentistry

September 20, 2014

It’s estimated that over 30% of the population avoids dental care due to fear. Today, there are a variety of methods available with Sedation Dentistry that can get you through a dental treatment without any pain or anxiety. If you suffer from apprehension brought on by a dental phobia make an appointment today with Avanti Dentistry. The dentists at Avanti Dentistry always provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for their patients. Sedation Dentistry services are available for patients in Tysons Corner, VA, Washington, D.C., McLean, Arlington, Fairfax, Vienna and surrounding areas.

Understanding Sedation Dentistry

It’s important to understand that sedation dentistry and anesthesia are two different procedures. General anesthesia, where patients are actually put to asleep, is typically only provided in the hospital. Sedation is a process used to establish a relaxed, easy and calm state, while maintaining consciousness. There are three methods the dentist may use to sedate you before a dental procedure:

  • Nitrous Oxide, sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” is one option the dentist may use to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. It will not put you to sleep and you will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. You will be asked to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few minutes you will feel the effects of the nitrous oxide gas. You may feel light-headed or a tingling or heaviness in your arms and legs. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.
  • IV Sedation gives the dentist optimal control of the amount of medication administered and allows them to readily increase or decrease your level of sedation as needed, quickly and comfortably. The dentist may require that you don’t eat or drink eight hours prior to the appointment. IV Sedation provides a faster onset of the sedation medications, meaning you’ll be able to feel the effects of the medication rather quickly. IV Sedation can benefit you if you have a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty sitting in a dental chair for long periods of time. You’ll be unaware of the sights, smells and sounds of the dental office. Patients usually remember little if anything of their appointment by the next day.
  • Oral Sedation is an increasingly popular treatment option for many people because it does not require the use of needles. The medications can be swallowed whole or crushed and administered by the dentist under the tongue. The type of sedative the dentist prescribes depends on the procedure being performed, the patient’s medical condition and any other drugs they take. In most cases the dentist uses a class of sedative medication called benzodiazepines. Examples of benzodiazepines include diazepam, lorazepam and triazolam. Sedative medication helps relax patients by slowing the action of the central nervous system. People remain aware of their surroundings, but are less responsive to external stimuli.

In addition to sedation, the dentist will also administer a local anesthetic. This local anesthetic will temporarily block pain impulses from the affected teeth and gum tissue. However, this injection will only occur after you are already sedated and comfortable. The dentists at Avanti Dentistry offer Sedation Dentistry services that can help you overcome your dental phobias and get you started with the dental care you need. Make an appointment with Avanti dentistry today to experience the difference yourself. Avanti Dentistry serves all of Tysons Corner, VA, Washington, D.C., McLean, Arlington, Fairfax, Vienna and surrounding cities.

How Does Smoking Affect Your Oral Health?

September 12, 2014

You probably already know that smoking is bad for your health. But you may not know that it is also bad for your teeth and gums. Smoking can cause tooth decay, bone loss in the jaw, inflammation of the salivary glands and delayed healing from oral and other surgeries. Smokers are also more prone to oral cancers than nonsmokers. If you smoke, make an appointment with the experienced and gentle dentists of Avanti Dentistry. They can help you treat the effects of smoking and improve your overall oral health. Avanti Dentistry is conveniently located in Tysons Corner, VA, serving patients from nearby Washington, D.C., Arlington, Fairfax, McLean, Vienna.

Smoking and Gum Disease

Not only do tobacco products stain your teeth and give you bad breath, they can also lead to periodontal disease (gum disease). Smoking may be responsible for up to 75% of gum disease experienced by adults. If you choose to smoke, you are seven times more likely to develop gum disease than a nonsmoker. Smoking interferes with the normal function of gum tissue cells. This interference makes smokers vulnerable to infections and also impairs blood flow to the gums which may affect wound healing.

Smokeless Tobacco Products

Smokeless tobacco products like snuff and chewing tobacco are just as harmful as cigarettes to your teeth and gums. Smokeless tobacco can irritate your gum tissue, causing it to recede or pull away from your teeth. Once the gum tissue recedes, your tooth roots become exposed, creating an increased risk of tooth decay. Exposed roots are also more sensitive to hot and cold, making eating and drinking uncomfortable. Smokeless tobacco products contain at least twenty eight chemicals that have been shown to increase the risk of oral cancer and cancer of the throat and esophagus. Chewing tobacco actually contains higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes. In fact, one can of snuff contains more nicotine than sixty cigarettes.

Treatment for Smoking Related Oral Health Problems in Tysons Corner, VA

One of the cosmetic effects of smoking is staining on the teeth due to the nicotine and tar in tobacco. It can make the teeth yellow in a very short time, and heavy smokers often complain that their teeth are almost brown after years of smoking. If you use tobacco products, you should make an appointment with Avanti Dentistry today. The dentists at Avanti Dentistry can readily assess your oral health needs with their state of the art periodontal treatments. You can also take advantage of their teeth whitening promotions to combat the affects of tobacco staining. Avanti Dentistry proudly serves patients throughout Tysons Corner, VA, Vienna, McLean, Arlington, Fairfax, Washington, D.C., and the surrounding communities.

It is a cutting-edge method of creating ceramic restorations – including crowns and bridges – that utilizes the latest in computer aided design and manufacturing for unparalleled precision and speed. While taking impressions for traditional crowns involves the use of messy materials, CEREC impressions are taken digitally for improved accuracy and patient comfort. The data captured is sent to a computer equipped with specialized software and the system designs your restoration to match your unique dentition.

Once the computer design process is complete, your crown can be created right here in our office rather than in a separate laboratory. This means that there’s no need to wait for a second appointment while you wear a temporary crown; you simply sit back and relax in our welcoming office atmosphere while your restoration is milled. Rebuild and Rejuvenate Your Smile with Dental Implants in Tysons Corner, VA

June 12, 2014

Missing teeth can negatively impact your daily life in numerous ways, preventing you from speaking clearly, eating comfortably, and smiling confidently. At Avanti Dentistry in Tysons Corner, VA, our team of experienced dentists believes that every patient deserves to enjoy the benefits of a complete, healthy smile; that’s why we offer a broad range of restorative dentistry services, including dental implants.

Benefits of Dental Implant Restorations

When you lose a permanent tooth, the bone tissue in the jaw where the tooth’s root once stood begins to deteriorate. While dental prosthetics like dentures and bridges effectively replace the crown portion of your tooth, the absence of a root does make a difference. With dental implants, a tiny post made of biocompatible titanium takes the place of the root, stimulating the bone in the jaw and preventing further damage. Because your new tooth is anchored firmly in place in the same way that a natural tooth is, you can feel completely free to eat anything you’d like and smile with confidence.

Your dental implants procedure will begin with a consultation with our skilled doctors and caring staff. We’ll discuss the process with you from beginning to end, ensuring that you understand what to expect and that you feel comfortable every step of the way. Give us a call today to schedule your visit and to begin your journey toward a healthier, happier life with dental implants.

Reclaim Your Healthy, Beautiful Smile
