Tooth extraction should always be a last resort. Dr. Kathy Le, Tysons Corner endodontist at Avanti Dentistry, believes in using careful root canal processes to quell infection and preserve natural tooth structure. Her outstanding skill saves teeth for years of service.
What is endodontic therapy?
Endodontic therapy is more commonly called root canal therapy. While the term “root canal” often conjures up visions of long, torturous dental procedures, modern root canal therapy from a well-credentialed endodontist is a comfortable, 2-visit dental service. Root canal therapy actually saves the patient pain and also allows him to keep his tooth for best chewing, speaking, jaw bone density and tooth alignment.
What happens during a Tysons Corner root canal?
When diagnosis is confirmed on oral exam and low radiation digital x-ray, Dr. Le makes the patient comfortable with simple local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. She also offers oral conscious sedation, IV sedation and nitrous oxide to patients who feel they need it. However, most root canal procedures are not so complex that they need this level of care.
The Tysons Corner dentist proceeds to drill a small pilot hole into the tooth, accessing the root canal, or inner pulp chamber. The objective of endodontic therapy is to remove this interior soft tissue made up of small blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.
Dr. Le uses several tiny files of increasing size to clean out the chamber completely and smooth the walls. She instills antimicrobial medication and fills the chamber with something called gutta percha. Gutta percha is a natural substance, rubbery in consistency and used for years as a sealant for endodontic procedures.
Dr. Le repeats the procedure on the other root canals. The final step is placement of a temporary filling. At the next appointment, the tooth receives its permanent restoration–a shiney new porcelain crown.
