Tysons Corner orthodontist, Dr. Ignacio Blasi, tells you about both.Proper tooth alignment actually protects your dental health. Proper tooth alignment actually protects your dental health. Straight teeth are easier to clean, leading to less decay and gum disease. Plus, when oral bite is right, people have fewer headaches, tooth grinding issues, and TMJ dysfunction. Perhaps best of all, a beautiful smile improves self-confidence and makes for a positive first impression.

Your Tysons Corner orthodontist, Dr. Ignacio Blasi at Avanti Dentistry, provides excellent orthodontic treatment plans. He helps patients decide if traditional braces or innovative Invisalign clear aligners are right for their particular cases.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of traditional braces?

Traditional bracket and wire braces have improved smiles for decades. Excellent for the most complex of orthodontic cases, these appliances are cemented directly to teeth and move them into healthier positions during treatment times that average 2 to 3 years or more.

Typical Tysons Corner braces are made of metal, but some newer types are ceramic, offering the advantage of being tooth-colored and less obvious. Some traditional braces are mounted on the tongue-side of teeth. These lingual braces accomplish what more conventional orthodontics do, but they cannot be seen when the patient smiles or talks.

Traditional braces require very diligent oral hygiene at home to maintain decay-free enamel and to keep gums healthy. Additionally, to avoid breaking wires and dislodging brackets, hard and sticky foods such as nuts and taffy must be avoided.

Dr. Blasi’s orthodontic patients come to Avanti Dentistry at regular intervals for appliance adjustments and progress checks. After treatment is over, patients wear retainers to prevent teeth from shifting back to their previous positions.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Invisalign?

Invisalign clear aligners are made from biocompatible acrylic. Barely noticeable to others, the aligners transform crooked, poorly spaced teeth into beautiful, well-aligned smiles. Best for mild to moderate problems, Tysons Corner Invisalign are fully removable, easy to clean and are so smooth that sore spots in the mouth are rare.

Another advantage of the Invisalign system is shorter treatment time. Usually, treatment is complete in about a year to 18 months and stays on track as long as the patient wears the appliances for the prescribed 20 to 22 hours a day. Individuals check in with Dr. Blasi every 4 to 6 weeks and receive their next sets of aligners–for a total of 18 to 30 pairs in all. Customized Vivera retainers keep newly aligned smiles in place after treatment.
