What To Expect During a Dental Check-up

Dental Checkup Tysons, VA

A dental checkup is a great way to determine if there are any oral health concerns that patients need treated. Those that are in good oral health, may still find it helpful to schedule regular check-up visits to ensure any early signs of potential problems are detected. This helps patients to continue to have a beautiful healthy smile long-term.

How a dental check-up works with a general dentist

All too many patients feel as if they do not need a dental check-up if they do not have any noticeable symptoms of an oral health concern. However, dental check-ups are encouraged for everyone. To help individuals prepare for their next dental check-up, it is helpful to know what the visit involves, which we review below.

Discussion of symptoms

The dental check-up typically begins with a discussion of the patient’s symptoms (if any). The dentist may also ask questions about previous dental treatment, general health and allergies. This is also a great opportunity for the patient to ask the dentist or hygienist any questions they have or let them know of any fears or anxieties they have so the dental professional can best accommodate them.

Oral examination

An oral examination involves a close look at the patient’s teeth, gums and soft palate to check for any signs of cavities, gum disease, teeth damage, gum pockets, oral cancer and a range of other potential concerns. This is non-invasive and only takes five to ten minutes to complete. This is a great place to start in determining if any treatments are necessary to improve the patient’s oral health or if treatment should be tailored towards prevention instead.

Dental X-rays

Dental X-ryas play an important role in detecting oral health concerns that the dentist cannot see with an oral examination alone. This includes bone loss in the jaw, the position of impacted teeth, deep dental decay and more. Dental X-rays are not necessary for every dental check-up. They are performed on the patient’s first dental visit and periodically (about once per year) afterward.

Dental cleaning

Dental cleaning is often performed after the dental examination and X-rays during the check-up. This ensures the dentist knows exactly how they need to perform the dental cleaning. If the patient has more severe oral health concerns such as periodontitis, then they may perform scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) to remove plaque and tartar below the gum line.

Oral health tips and education

At the end of the dental check-up, the dentist can schedule a follow-up visit and help the patient care for their teeth by providing oral health instructions and advice. This includes a structured oral care routine, dietary recommendations and how to protect teeth from damage.
