If you are tired of the flaws and imperfections in your teeth, dental veneers could be the solution for you! Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that are custom made to fit your smile and are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth to cover flaws and give you a picture-perfect smile. Veneers are typically made of porcelain to match the color and translucence of your natural tooth enamel and are stain resistant.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin handcrafted porcelain shields worn on the front of the tooth which improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, cracked, stained or worn. Veneers are thin as contact lenses, and are an aesthetically pleasing option of closing gaps, lengthening teeth, and providing symmetry to make your smile more natural. Veneers are intended to last for many years without changing color. They are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in dentistry. Ask your dentist if veneers may be right for you.

Dental veneers are typically recommended to:

  • Close large gaps and spaces between the teeth
  • Improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen
  • Correct teeth that are slightly crooked
  • Restore damaged teeth, such as those that are broken, worn, chipped or fractured
  • Whiten severely stained teeth

Plan for two appointments with our dentists when you receive veneers. During the first appointment, we will take impressions for your veneers, prepare your teeth and help you choose the correct shade of white for your final result. After your veneers have been created, you will return for your second appointment, and our dentists will check that the veneers’ fit before bonding them into place on your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Veneers

Can dental veneers fix teeth that are unevenly shaped?

Dental veneers are an excellent solution for reshaping teeth that appear uneven. Thin porcelain shells attached to the front of your teeth are called veneers. They let your dentist remodel your smile and enhance its overall symmetry, which are useful for patients with teeth that are naturally uneven, worn down, or misshapen. Veneers are designed to mimic the appearance of natural teeth, providing a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing result. It’s a minimally invasive solution that can significantly improve the appearance of your smile in just a few appointments.

Do dental veneers stain like natural teeth?

Porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining than natural enamel due to their non-porous nature, which prevents substances like coffee and red wine from causing discoloration. However, surrounding natural teeth can still stain, so maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Proper care, including regular brushing and dental checkups, helps preserve the appearance of your veneers. If your natural teeth discolor, teeth whitening may help match them with your veneers.

Can dental veneers correct bite issues or misalignment?

Veneers can enhance the appearance of mild misalignments but do not address functional bite problems or severe misalignment. They can cover slightly crooked teeth or small gaps, providing a more uniform look. For complex orthodontic issues, treatments like Invisalign or braces may be necessary. Consult your dentist to determine if veneers are appropriate for your needs.

Can I get dental veneers if I grind my teeth (bruxism)?

Patients with bruxism can still get veneers, but they should take precautions. Teeth grinding can damage veneers, so your dentist may recommend a custom night guard to cushion your teeth while you sleep. Addressing the underlying bruxism issue and maintaining regular dental checkups is crucial for the longevity of your veneers.

Can veneers be used to fix gaps between teeth (diastema)?

Yes, veneers can close small gaps between teeth. By placing custom-made veneers on adjacent teeth, your dentist can create a more uniform smile. This minimally invasive solution is quicker than orthodontic treatment. However, for larger gaps, orthodontics like Invisalign may be more suitable. Your dentist will evaluate your specific case to determine if veneers are the right choice.

Can I get veneers if I have sensitive teeth?

If you have sensitive teeth, you can still get veneers, but discuss your sensitivity with your dentist. Placing veneers involves removing a small amount of enamel, which may temporarily increase sensitivity. However, veneers can provide additional protection against sensitivity in the long term. Your dentist will assess the cause of your sensitivity and determine if veneers are appropriate.

Can veneers make my teeth look wider?

Yes, veneers can be designed to make teeth appear wider, which is helpful for patients who feel their teeth look too small or narrow. By customizing the size and shape of the veneers, your dentist can create a broader, more proportionate smile. This cosmetic enhancement can dramatically change the overall appearance of your teeth, giving them a fuller look. Veneers are a versatile option that allows for detailed adjustments to improve your smile’s symmetry and proportions, making them an ideal choice for patients seeking a more balanced, natural look.

After getting veneers, care is key. Dr. Fotini recommends routine dental visits, customized nightguards, and lifestyle tips like limiting coffee, wine, and sugary drinks. Learn how to keep your veneers strong, stain-free, and long-lasting for the perfect smile.

Hi, I am Dr. Fotini Chrisopoulos a top Washingtonian Prosthodontist and smile expert, also known as Dr. Fotini. I want to talk to you about how to take care of your veneers after you receive them. First of all, you have to maintain regular dental visits in order to keep your gums and the teeth healthy. In addition, you want to limit any sugary drinks or anything very, very hard because you can break your veneers as you have broken your natural teeth. I also recommend a customized nightguards that I make for all my patients in order to have the veneers last a very, very long time. All those veneers are stain resistant. If you drink a lot of coffee, red wine, you may still impact the color over the long term, so you kind of want to limit that. But also, sometimes I tell patients to use a straw in case after receiving your veneer, you feel some sensitivity in cold. That’s normal. But if that persists and becomes worse with time, you definitely should let your dentist know.
