If you have to wear dentures after significant tooth loss, take time to research your options so you’ll know what kind of dentures to choose. At Avanti Dentistry, we offer traditional and implant-supported dentures to our patients in Tysons, Virginia, and nearby communities. These FAQs explain more about implant dentures and how they can benefit you.
Implant dentures are artificial teeth supported by dental implants – titanium screws that are inserted into your jawbone surgically to serve as tooth roots. Once the implants are in your jaw, they’ll fuse with your bone system to form a solid foundation for your new teeth. This process can take 3 to 6 months to complete. Upon completion, we will attach an abutment and your dentures to the implants to complete your treatment.
Traditional dentures sit on top of your gums and are held in place by suction and adhesives. At night, they’re removed for soaking and cleaning. Implant dentures are anchored by “implant roots” that have fused with your jawbone to support your new teeth. Fixed implant dentures aren’t removable as they’re permanently attached to your implants.
Conventional denture treatment is noninvasive and can be completed relatively quickly to restore missing teeth. Implant dentures require surgery, which can take up to six months or longer to complete.
Ill-fitting removable dentures can slip or shift when you talk, laugh, or chew. Implant dentures will never come loose. They give your smile the look and feel of natural teeth and full functionality for biting and chewing.
Implant dentures are for people who have lost most or all of their teeth due to decay, injury, or gum disease. The best candidates for implant dentures are healthy nonsmokers who have good oral health and sufficient bone density to support the implants, although a bone graft can be done to compensate for bone loss.
No. The surgery is done under anesthesia, so our patients feel no discomfort or pain. We can also give you a sedative to help you relax during your treatment. You may feel some discomfort, swelling, and pain for several days after the surgery, which can be relieved with OTC medication.
Amazingly enough, implants can last a lifetime with proper care. Once the implants fuse with your jaw, they become a permanent fixture in your mouth, providing structural support for your artificial teeth. In like manner, custom-made porcelain dentures can last 20 or more years with adequate care. Diligent oral care and routine dental cleaning can help boost the lifespan of your dentures. We also recommend avoiding eating hard and sticky foods to keep your dentures strong and healthy long-term.
