Dental implants are tiny metal posts surgically inserted in the jawbone to replace one or more teeth. Many patients love dental implants because they are designed like natural teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges that only replace the crown, dental implants replace the entire tooth from the root up. Due to the unique implant design, they replace your missing teeth with incredible function and aesthetics.
Have you lost teeth in Tysons, Virginia? You are probably wondering how many implants you need to restore your smile. At Avanti Dentistry, we understand the significance of this decision and are here to guide you through the process with expertise and care.
Generally, one implant replaces one missing tooth with the help of a crown. However, one tooth can support a maximum of three artificial teeth in a row using a fixed bridge. Often called an implant-supported bridge, this tooth restoration fills gaps in the mouth to restore your smile’s function and aesthetics.
If you want to replace more than three teeth, you need more than one implant. Typically, you need at least 4-6 implants per jaw to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Known as full-mouth dental implants, these restorations are a conservative and affordable solution for complete mouth restoration.
Your dental implant treatment starts with a consultation with a qualified dentist to assess your candidature for implantology. This exam includes thoroughly examining your teeth, gums, and bones using digital X-rays, photographs, and 3D scans. Your dental implant procedure takes a digital-led approach to minimize complications.
Once we establish your eligibility for an implant, the next step is to place the implants surgically. Sometimes, you may need pre-surgery procedures like tooth extraction or bone graft to prepare your bone for an implant.
We carry out the implant surgery after numbing your gums with local anesthetics. However, if you are anxious about the procedure, talk to our dental team about sedation dentistry. Once you are at ease, the dentist will incise your gums and bone to place a titanium post. After placing the implant, we close the surgical site with sutures.
For 3-6 months, we’ll leave the implant to heal and fuse with the jawbone through osseointegration. After fusion, you’ll return to our office to place an abutment through a minor surgery (sometimes, we can place an abutment during implant surgery). An abutment is a small metal connector that links the implant fixture to the final restoration.
The final step is to restore your implant with a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on the number of teeth lost.
Dental implants offer numerous benefits, whether used to restore one or multiple teeth.
