Lumineers® are a special type of ultra-thin dental veneer. Lumineers are uniquely designed to mimic the natural appearance of your tooth enamel and can be bonded to the surface of your teeth without grinding down any of your original tooth structure. Not only does this preserve your teeth, but it also makes the bonding procedure much more comfortable for you.
When you receive Lumineers, you will need to plan for two visits to our office. During the first visit, our dentists will take a mold of your teeth and consult with you to determine the correct shade of white for your Lumineers. This mold will then be sent to the DenMat Lab, where all Lumineers are created.
After your Lumineers have been created and sent to our office, you will return for your second appointment, when our dentists will carefully and painlessly bond your Lumineers to your teeth. This process will take about an hour. You should not experience any sensitivity following the placement of your Lumineers — they are designed to feel comfortable and natural from the moment they are placed on your teeth. Your Lumineers can last for up to 20 years.
Frequently Asked Questions About Lumineers
Are Lumineers reversible?
Yes, Lumineers are reversible because they require little to no enamel removal. Unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers are ultra-thin and can be applied directly to the tooth’s surface, preserving the natural tooth underneath. This allows for easy removal or replacement without damaging the original tooth, making Lumineers a great option for those who want a noninvasive, flexible cosmetic solution without the permanence of traditional veneers.
Can Lumineers fix worn-down teeth?
Yes, Lumineers can restore worn-down teeth, covering worn edges and giving them a fuller appearance. To avoid unnecessary harm, your dentist can advise treating underlying problems, such as grinding, before using Lumineers if your teeth are severely worn down.
Are Lumineers stain-resistant?
Lumineers are made from a specialized type of porcelain that is highly resistant to staining. This means they maintain their bright, white appearance longer than natural teeth, which can absorb pigments from coffee, wine, and other foods. Though stain-resistant, maintaining good oral hygiene and limiting staining foods is essential to preserve their appearance. Although they are durable, regular checkups and cleanings will help ensure that your Lumineers look their best for years to come.
Do Lumineers feel different from natural teeth?
Once placed, Lumineers feel natural. Thin like contact lenses, they add minimal bulk, and patients quickly adjust to them. The smooth, custom fit ensures that they blend seamlessly with your bite and overall dental structure, making them comfortable to wear and eat with. If you notice any discomfort, your dentist can make adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.
Can Lumineers be used on just one tooth?
Depending on your cosmetic needs, lumineers can be applied to one or several teeth. If you have a discolored, chipped, or slightly misaligned tooth, a Lumineer can be customized to match the color and shape of the surrounding teeth, creating a natural, cohesive appearance. Lumineers are highly customizable, so whether you need one tooth corrected or an entire smile makeover, they offer a flexible solution tailored to your specific goals.
Can I get Lumineers if I have gum disease?
Before getting Lumineers, it’s crucial to address any gum disease or periodontal issues. Healthy gums are essential for successful Lumineer placement and long-term oral health. If you have gum disease, your dentist will likely recommend treating it first with deep cleanings, antibiotics, or other therapies to restore your gums to health. Once your gums are stable, Lumineers can be applied. Healthy gums provide a strong foundation for Lumineers, ensuring a better fit and longevity. However, ignoring gum disease before cosmetic treatments can lead to complications like poor fit or future damage.
Are Lumineers a good option for fixing old dental work?
Yes, Lumineers can update or refresh older dental work like crowns, bridges, or worn veneers. Since they are custom-made and require minimal preparation, Lumineers can cover outdated or discolored dental restorations, giving your smile a more uniform and modern appearance. However, it’s essential to ensure that the underlying dental work is still structurally sound before applying Lumineers. Your dentist will evaluate the condition of your existing dental work to ensure Lumineers will bond properly and provide the desired cosmetic improvement.
