What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are advanced restorations that sit completely over the top of a damaged tooth or teeth. They can be used as part of a variety of treatment plans, including:
- To repair decay or damage too severe for restoration using a filling or to replace a filling that has fallen out
- To improve the appearance of a stained or irregularly shaped tooth
- To protect a root canal treated tooth
- To replace a lost tooth when supported by a dental implant
- To support a fixed bridge dental restoration
Why Choose Metal-Free Crowns?
The most significant reason patients choose metal-free crowns is the improved appearance. Metal-free restorations are also beneficial for those patients who have had adverse responses or allergic reactions to metal in the past. Unlike porcelain fused to metal restorations, completely metal-free restorations are stain resistant, and they will maintain their natural look even after years of wear.
What is the Metal-Free Restoration Process?
Metal-free dental restorations can be placed over the course of two trips to our dental office in Tysons. At the first appointment, we prepare the tooth or teeth. This involves removing damaged tooth structure. We’ll also need to remove a small amount of enamel all the way around the tooth to allow the crown to fit into your existing smile line without causing challenges to flossing or placing pressure on surrounding teeth. When we’ve prepared your tooth, we capture impressions of your smile that will be used to design and craft your metal-free dental restoration. Then, we place a temporary prosthetic to protect your smile. At your second appointment, we simply need to remove the temporary and replace it with your final metal-free dental crown or other restoration seamlessly restoring your smile.
Do I Need to Care for My Smile Differently?
Metal-free dental restorations are usually crafted from pure ceramic. This material is a little softer than tooth enamel, and it can wear away more quickly. In order to limit unintended wear, we recommend using the softest bristled toothbrushes and minimally abrasive toothpastes. You should also consider using a waxed floss to limit pulling around the edges of your dental crown. Don’t use teeth to open packages and avoid habits like chewing on ice or fingernails. Finally, don’t forget to schedule your regular dental checkup and teeth cleaning appointments with our team. During these preventive visits, we’ll examine your existing dental restorations for signs of wear and damage. In many cases, we are able to repair the metal-free dental restoration if we notice wear or damage in early stages.
