Tysons Corner Sedation Dentist Helping Patients Relax
A survey by the American Association of Endodontists found that 80 percent of adult Americans fear dentists; more than half say this fear may keep them from seeing a dentist. Approximately 5 percent to 10 percent of adult Americans are considered dental phobics — people so terrified of dental treatment that they avoid dental care at all costs. At Avanti Dentistry, we're here to help!
Avanti Dentistry is able to provide patients who experience anxiety during a dental visit with several options to help them relax during treatment.
Other anti-anxiety oral medications can be taken by the patient one hour prior to treatment and are also highly effective for most patients. Conscious (IV) sedation can also be provided.
The staff at Avanti Dentistry is committed to making your dental treatment as comfortable as possible and are fully qualified and prepared to utilize the techniques most appropriate for your needs.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is easily and safely administered by the dentist through a small mask that covers only the nose. As the patient breathes normally, nitrous oxide relaxes the patient and quickly relieves anxiety. Best of all, because the effects of nitrous oxide dissipate immediately after the mask is removed, the patient is able to continue with the normal activities of their day.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation will involve the patient taking a prescribed sedative at a certain point before their procedure is set to begin. The intended effects will depend on our recommended medication – some patients may enter a mild contented state while others can experience deep relaxation that could result in them remembering very little about the procedure. Patients undergoing oral conscious sedation will need to be escorted both to and from Avanti Dentistry by a trusted friend or family member.
Advanced IV Sedation
IV sedation is administered intravenously through the patient’s arm or hand, and it’s typically reserved for patients who are extremely anxious or who are undergoing an exceptionally long and/or involved procedure. Patients will remain conscious, but they should become relaxed to the point that their appointment flies by in what seems like seconds, their memories of the experience faint or even nonexistent. The delivery method allows us to make alterations if needed to ensure complete comfort, and we may administer additional oxygen if needed. It’s required that you have an escort take you home following your procedure and keep an eye on you for the rest of the day until the sedation wears off.
Sleep Dentistry with General Anesthesia
When a patient’s treatment needs are exceptionally complex or their fear can’t be conquered through the above methods, our doctors may recommend general anesthesia. This technique essentially puts patients to sleep for the duration of their procedure, ensuring that they won’t have any memories of their care experience. Our staff will be sure to closely monitor your vitals throughout the treatment to ensure you’re safe and comfortable as we work on improving your oral health and beauty.
