Single Tooth Replacement – Tysons, VA
Complete Your Smile and Prevent Dental Problems
Millions of Americans are missing at least one tooth, perhaps due to past dental problems or an accident. They may not even have considered filling in the gap. After all, they can still chew all of their favorite foods, and they may not be concerned with aesthetics. But replacing even a single missing tooth is important! That space in your mouth may cause your other teeth to drift out of place, leading to painful misalignment and premature wear and tear for your remaining teeth. The gum tissue and bone that once supported the missing tooth will even begin to deteriorate.
We encourage all of our patients who are missing a member of their smile to seriously consider their treatment options for single tooth replacement in Tysons.
Single Tooth Replacement Options
There are two ways to replace a single missing tooth:
A fixed bridge, sometimes called crown and bridge, is a custom-made dental prosthesis. It has two crowns, which fit over the teeth that are adjacent to the empty space. An artificial tooth, called a pontic, is suspended between the crowns. This tooth replacement solution is popular because it can be very sturdy and natural-looking. It helps to prevent the remaining natural teeth from drifting out of place and provides a bite force that is strong enough to stand up to most foods.
A single tooth dental implant in Tysons is a small titanium cylinder that gets placed below the gum line in a minimally invasive surgery. The soft tissue around the site heals fairly quickly, but it may take at least a few months for the bone to recover. During this period, a process known as osseointegration takes place; the jaw fuses to the implant, creating an incredibly strong bond. Eventually, we place a lifelike, custom-made crown on top of the implant to replace the visible portion of the missing tooth.
The Benefits of Implant-Supported Single Tooth Replacement
We often recommend that our patients choose a dental implant to replace their missing tooth. This treatment offers a number of truly outstanding advantages:
- An implant replaces the entire structure of the lost tooth, not just the crown. This provides patients with the strong, most comfortable bite possible.
- The bond that an implant forms with the bone around it helps to prevent the jaw from losing density and height.
- When placing a fixed bridge, we must significantly alter the abutment teeth (the teeth that receive the crowns). A dental implant does not require this step and allows us to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
- A fixed bridge may last for just 10 – 15 years or so, whereas a dental implant can endure for 30 years or longer.
