Why see Dr. Fotini Chrisopoulos, the board-eligible prosthodontist?
Prosthodontists are THE experts when it comes to replacing anything in your mouth. This can vary from one tooth, many teeth, or even all the teeth and gums in the mouth. While there are many dentists who can perform some of these procedures, Dr. Fotini Chrisopoulos is a specialist dedicated to these types of treatments. Rigorous training and years of experience give her a unique understanding of the dynamics of a beautiful smile and the preservation of a healthy mouth.
Smile Analysis has to do with the tooth position, the lip position, all the anatomy of the mouth. When we have the patient come in, we take a full range of x-rays, photographs, impressions of the mouth and the current aesthetician. The most important thing is to identify what is the patient looking for, his chief complaint, because beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
So after we have evaluated the patient, we send those impressions to our dental lab technician and he proceeds with a dental wax up. Wax up is the guideline that shows us how we want to change the shape of the teeth, the form of the teeth, and then we are able to try that in the mouth of the patient and the patient can visualize how he smiled will be before we even start.
Not all Dentures are the same, many dentists proceed with a denture fabrication that do not fit well. If you have a denture that doesn’t fit well, you can not feel comfortable. You have irritation of your tissue, and even if you just have dentures in your mouth without any implants supporting the dentures, your whole bone changes. So over several years, you will need to replace your denture. What we hear from most of the patients is the fact that after a few years they’re not able to chew properly and we have seen them losing weight.
They’re form of the face changes, and they don’t like the fact that they have to take off the denture and place them in a cup at night. Then patients come in and they want something more permanent. Implants have evolved and our main patient pull for implants, they’re missing their teeth, are patients who have dentures and they want to improve that.
Implants go into the bone and the dentures can either snap on the implants, and then we have what we call the removable denture, or it can be fixed on the implants so the patient doesn’t take out the denture anymore, and that improves the life of the patient by improving the function, aesthetics, eating, and the patient feels more comfortable in his daily life.
