Early Orthodontic Treatment for Crossbite

early orthodontic treatment Tysons, VA

Not all kids need early orthodontic treatment, but if your child has a crossbite, it may be time to visit a family dentist. This misalignment can cause oral health problems and other issues. Luckily, your child’s family dentist has the knowledge and training to correct this concern before it causes too many problems. You should not wait too long to address this condition.

Understanding crossbites

Jaw misalignments are not rare among children. Crossbites are no exception. This condition occurs when the upper and lower row of teeth do not meet correctly. In a healthy mouth, the upper row sits a bit outside of the lower row at the back and the front. This is the case on both sides of the mouth. With some crossbites, the top back teeth sit outside the bottom back teeth. In other patients, the upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth.

The effects of crossbites

Some parents may not worry much about doing early orthodontic treatment for the children if they have a crossbite. After all, different interventions can repair the child’s smile later on. However, this condition is not just aesthetically unappealing, but it can have other consequences. Crossbites can cause severe headaches. The pain can even radiate into the jaw, neck, back or shoulders. These teeth can be hard to reach with a toothbrush, which can lead to tooth decay.

Braces for early orthodontic treatment

Braces are a longtime form of orthodontic care. The metal braces can correct a crossbite by repairing both the upper and lower teeth. By straightening them, the jaw becomes aligned properly. Braces consist of brackets, wires and elastics, which put pressure on the teeth and jaw ligaments to move the teeth into the right spot. The family dentist will adjust these every four to six weeks.

Removable expander

Braces are not always the only solution in early orthodontic treatment to fix crossbites. Removable expanders can widen the upper palate, promoting jaw alignment. This is often a good approach when the crossbite is minor. It is most effective for the patient to wear this appliance at night while sleeping.

Maxillary expander

This appliance is not removable but attaches to the upper teeth and sits on the child’s palate. Its job is to widen the palate as it is still growing. The family dentist will regularly adjust the device. A special key is used every few weeks or months to change the pressure on the palate. This approach can be good for younger patients because their palate is still developing.

Do something about your child’s crossbite today

If you have never considered doing early orthodontic treatment for your child, you may want to rethink your position. If your child is struggling with a crossbite, you should not have to wait until adolescence. Family dentists can start using methods to repair this jaw alignment problem as early as age 7. Find a family dentist near you that you feel good about. Then schedule a time for the family dentist to examine your child and direct you on what you should do next.
