What are dental implants?
First and foremost, our team will talk to you about what a dental implant is and how it works. Dental implants are extremely small posts inserted by the dentist during oral surgery into the jawbone where a lost tooth once remained. This allows the natural jawbone to grow around the implant through osseointegration. Because the actual bone of the jaw wraps around the dental implant, the implant becomes one with the jaw and is held in place just like natural teeth.
The portion of the dental implant that sits above the gum line, known as the abutment, can then be restored with a dental restoration such as a denture, bridge, or porcelain crown, depending on how many teeth are being replaced with this treatment.
What is the process of obtaining a dental implant?

During the procedure, patients are comfortable thanks to sedation and local anesthetics. The implant is placed, and the gums are sutured around the abutment. Over several weeks, the jawbone will wrap around the implant and solidify it in place. This provides the strength and stability needed to hold it in place. Once the process of osseointegration has occurred, the dental implant is covered with a restoration chosen prior to the initial surgery.

How long do dental implants last?
Patients love dental implants because they are a permanent solution. When patients care for their teeth and gums and avoid further tooth loss, they will benefit from an implant for life!
If patients develop certain problems, such as periodontal disease, this has the potential to cause the implant to fail in the future. At this point, it may be replaced with another implant if the bone can be grafted back or with an alternative such as a partial denture, full denture, or dental bridge.
